Author Guidelines

Papers will be considered for publication if they add to the knowledge of coastal and marine ecosystems, estuarine and freshwater wetlands. Contributions concerned with general reviews, conservation issues and management strategies of wetlands systems will also be published. The criteria for publication are that the work should be presented concisely and clearly in English and introductory material should not exceed that which is necessary to indicate the essential background. All papers are reviewed by referees and to prevent delays in publication small editorial revisions may be made without reference to the author.
In those cases where institutional permission is required before publication, it is the author's responsibility to obtain the necessary permission prior to submission. After acceptance of a manuscript the copyright resides with the Society.
Wetlands (Australia) is included on the DEST Register of Refereed Journals.
Manuscripts. The original and one copy of the manuscript must be submitted. The original must be typed with double spacing throughout, and with a margin of at least 4 cm on the left-hand side. All pages of the manuscript must be numbered consecutively, including those carrying references, tables and captions to illustrations, all of which are to be placed after the text. Illustrations, both line drawings and photographs, are to be numbered as figures in a common sequence, and each must be referred to in the text. A typed list of captions is required. Original illustrations will be returned if requested.
Authors are referred to the 'Style Manual for Authors', Editors and Printers of Australian Government Publications (3rd edn., 1978; Australian Government Publishing Service, Canberra) for conventions to be generally adopted in the preparation of their paper.
Authors are also advised to note the layout of headings, tables and illustrations in the latest issues of the Journal. Poorly prepared or unnecessarily lengthy manuscripts have less prospect of being accepted.
Manuscripts should be submitted on Macintosh discs preferably saved as Microsoft Word documents. Please note that text which is to finally appear in columns should be compiled as consecutive paragraphs (i.e. not tabulated to give the appearance of column format) and a description of the required layout should be supplied.
References are cited chronologically in the text by the author and date and are not numbered. All references in the text must be listed at the end of the paper, with the names of authors arranged alphabetically. Titles must be included for all references. Authors are referred to the latest issues of the Journal for the style used in citing references to books and other literature. Abbreviations, if used, should conform to those given in the latest issue of 'Serial Sources for the BIOSIS Data Base' (BioSciences Information Service, Philadelphia, Pa.).
Units of Measurement. The metric system is adopted as standard. The system of units known as SI should be used.
Tables. Tables should be numbered in arabic numerals and each submitted on a separate sheet with an appropriate legend at the head. The preferred position in the text should be indicated. Tables should be kept as simple as possible.
Illustrations. The Journal encourages the submission of original line drawings and of lettered and mounted photographs which are suitable for direct reproduction. If facilities are not available to the author for lettering of illustrations to a suitable standard, unlettered illustrations may be submitted. Original line drawings must be drawn with black ink on white board or on drawing or tracing paper; their dimensions should have regard for the size of the printed page. Photographs must be of high quality with a full range of tones and good contrast. Before being mounted, photographs should be trimmed squarely to exclude features not relevant to the paper.
Editor. All manuscripts and correspondence regarding Wetlands should be addressed to :

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  2. The submission file is in Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.
  3. All URL addresses in the text (e.g., http://pkp.sfu.ca) are activated and ready to click.
  4. The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  5. The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  6. The text, if submitted to a peer-reviewed section (e.g., Articles), has had the authors' names removed. If an author is cited, "Author" and year are used in the bibliography and footnotes, instead of author's name, paper title, etc. The author's name has also been removed from the document's Properties, which in Microsoft Word is found in the File menu.
